The amplifier also is the source of failure; therefore, a careful availability consideration and constant effort of maintenance are required. add_icon=&#8221;true&#8221;][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1533194447280{margin-top: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The klystron is an amplifier that has been used extensively for accelerators for many years at MW-level. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">They amplify a lower level RF signal to the power level needed for each cavity, which is feed to the RF distribution system and transmitted up to the RFQ and DTL tanks. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In a klystron the electrons in an electron beam are velocity-modulated by a low-level signal by passing through several cavities the electrons are velocity modulated and bunched to provide an amplified signal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Klystrons offer very high power \u2013 up to several MW using multi-beam devices, extremely high gain up to 50 dB and an efficiency up to around 65% at maximum power (basically a class A) with pulsed HV (that powers the electron gun and hence the electron beam).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1537537967711{margin-top: 0px !important;margin-bottom: 0px !important;border-bottom-width: 0px !important;padding-top: 0px !important;padding-bottom: 0px !important;}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h6 class=\"p1\">The main specifications of the klystrons are:<\/h6>\n<ul class=\"specialbullet\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Nominal output peak power \u2265 2.9 MW.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Central frequency 352.21 MHz.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Bandwidth \u2265 +\/- 1 MHz.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">High voltage pulse width \u2264 4 ms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">RF pulse width \u2264 3.5 ms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">RF Pulse repetition rate \u2264 14 Hz.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">VSWR \u2264 1.2<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Three klystrons were manufactured by CPI and other new three klystrons are in the call for tender process.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;2813&#8243; Each amplifier shall provide some 20kW at the cavity coupler, however the amplifier peak output RF power will need to be higher taking into account transmission line losses, margin for overhead and RF regulation. Therefore each SSPA transmitter is expected to deliver 30kW peak output power at its output.
