Tuning Beam dump
The main purpose of the tuning beam dump is to provide means for tuning the proton linear accelerator at low power while the target station is not ready for operation and as part of the start-up scheme prior to the beam on target. Hence, the tuning beam dump will have to deal with high-energy protons, stopping the beam and evacuating the corresponding energy. This structure must include alignment, support and connection features as well as the necessary shielding to guarantee safe operation of the facility.
The Tuning Beam dump is divided in two components:
The main functions are:
- The tuning beam dump will be located in the basement of the target station in the A2T area of the target building, being accessible and replaceable from the accelerator tunnel. Due to its position in the building, its substitution will procedure a long period shutdown of the facility. Hence, it have to be design for the complete life time of the facility and considering large safety margins to ensure a safe operation.
- The tuning beam dump will be highly irradiated and thus need to be designed to be easy to maintain and require minimum handling.
